When Berlin was behind the Iron Curtain, Germany moved the seat of the federal government to Bonn, a city on the banks of the Rhine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the southernmost part of the Rhine-Ruhr region. Roughly a third of all ministerial jobs are still located in Bonn.
